A History of Confidence
For over 50 years, AEGIS® has been the world’s most widely used enduring antimicrobial surface protectant chosen by name brands to protect their facilities, fleet, and products. Globally registered, AEGIS® has a proven track record of being safe, durable, and effective.
Combined with normal cleaning practices, AEGIS® provides residual surface protection against the growth of bacteria, mold, mildew, algae, and yeast.
aegis | ˈējis |
noun
ORIGIN early 17th century (denoting armour or a shield, especially that of a god): via Latin from Greek aigis ‘shield of Zeus’.
How AEGIS® Works
AEGIS® modifies treated surfaces to protect them from the harmful effects of bacteria, mold, fungus, algae, and yeast.
Think of AEGIS® as a microscopic spikes and a treated surface like a bed of nails. Bacteria, mold, fungus, mildew, algae, and yeast are attracted to AEGIS’® positive charge and then stabbed and electrocuted by AEGIS’® long carbon spikes.
AEGIS® does not break down or lose strength over time. It provides long-lasting antimicrobial efficacy, protecting the surfaces where we live, work, and play.
The technical
active ingredient
The technical active ingredient is a conventional quaternary ammonium salt (organo) which is chemically spliced to a silane molecule, resulting in a highly active molecule –
(3-trimethoxsilyl propyldimethyloctadecyl ammonium chloride)
…that has both tenacious bonding capabilities as well as excellent antimicrobial properties.
During the application process stable bonds between OH- sites on the AEGIS® molecule and the positive charge on the nitrogen atoms (N+) form. The result of this chemical process is the creation of a large co-polymer chemically bonding AEGIS® to the target substrate.
Silane Base
Enables the antimicrobial to anchor securely onto the substrate providing long-lasting antimicrobial product protection.
Long Molecular Carbon Chain
The long molecular chain or “spike” is the part that comes into contact with and disrupts the cell membranes.
Positively Charged Nitrogen
The positively charged nitrogen atom attracts the negatively charged cell walls of bacteria, molds, mildew, and fungi.
Commonly Treated Surfaces
AEGIS® can be used on both hard and soft non-food preparation surfaces. AEGIS® has extensive efficacy testing on a wide range of surfaces including plastic, wood, metal, glass, and textiles.
AEGIS® is applied in both the manufacturing process for commercial, industrial and consumer products as well as in the built environment including a wide range of buildings and vehicles. For a list of industry specific case studies .
Application Techniques
AEGIS® can be either directly integrated into the manufacturing process or applied onsite using a combination of spray and wipe, fogging or electrostatic sprayers. AEGIS® should only be applied by trained professionals – PROTECT PROs.
AEGIS® is registered with health authorities around the world including:
Health Canada: PCP# 15133
US Environmental Protection Agency: 64881-1 & 64881-7
European Union: AEGIS is listed as PT-7 and PT-9 with the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH).
