What is AEGIS®
AEGIS® (AEM 5700) is the world’s most widely used antimicrobial surface coating. AEGIS® Microbe Shield®, is the engine that powers the PROTECT Surface Protection Program™.
AEGIS® is an enduring Anti-Microbial Surface Protectant. It is combined with normal cleaning practices to provide residual surface protection against the growth of bacteria, mold and mildew that can stain and degrade the surface.
AEGIS® forms a protective coating that can molecularly bond with surfaces upon application. Bacteria, molds, and mildew are attracted to the coating’s positive charge. When applied to surfaces, AEGIS® forms a colorless, odorless, positively charged barrier that attracts, then electrocutes and interferes with their negatively charged cell membranes. AEGIS® contributes to enduring clean surfaces by utilizing a charge disruption mode of action.
AEGIS® technology has a long history of delivering durable, long-lasting antimicrobial efficacy to protect the surface itself from bacterial damage.
The technical active ingredient is a conventional quaternary ammonium salt (organo) which is chemically spliced to a silane molecule, resulting in a highly active molecule –
(3-trimethoxsilyl propyldimethyloctadecyl ammonium chloride)
…that has both tenacious bonding capabilities as well as excellent antimicrobial properties.
During the application process stable bonds between OH- sites on the AEM5700 molecule and the positive charge on the nitrogen atoms (N+) form. The result of this chemical process is the creation of a large co-polymer chemically bonding AEM5700 to the target substrate.
Positively Charged Nitrogen
The positively charged atom of nitrogen attracts the negatively charged cell walls of bacteria, molds, mildew, and fungi.
Enables the antimicrobial to anchor securely onto the substrate providing long-lasting antimicrobial product protection.
Long Molecular Carbon Chain
The long molecular chain or “spike” is the part that comes into contact and disrupts the cell membranes
What does all of this science translate to?
Think of AEGIS® as a microscopic spike and a treated surface like bed of nails. AEGIS® modifies treated surfaces creating an inhospitable environment – in other words, Mold, mildew, bacteria, and fungi that corrode and degrade face a tough time attempting to live on protected surfaces.
This combination of stabbing and electrocution allows the technology to deliver its intended effect.
AEGIS® has over 3 decades of experience in a multitude of different types of applications.
It is applied to control odors and prevent damaging bacterial growth in the manufacturing process of products such as high performance athletic wear, intimate apparel, and baby diapers.
Because AEM5700 does not dissipate or leach. As the water in the AEGIS® solution evaporates during the drying process, unbound organosilane molecules chemically bond to treated surface – the result is a treated surface with no migrating residue, no odour, and no off-gassing of any kind.
Extensive toxicological / safety testing has been completed to satisfy Health Canada, the US EPA, and many other regulatory agencies of countries around the world.

Surfaces that have been cleaned, and have also been treated with AEGIS® are able to prevent the ongoing growth of mold, mildew, bacteria and fungi. Typically a surface treatment lasts up to a year before needing a reapplication. Certain very high use surfaces may need a more frequent application, but for the vast majority of surfaces, we recommend once a year.
